Wellness Tortillas
A Healthy Anytime Meal

Wellness Tortillas

Making healthy eating choices can be difficult for time pressed families. Wellness Foods has the answer – Wellness Tortillas. These tortillas are quick and easy to prepare and they taste so good you’ll forget how nutritious they are. Wellness tortillas are an important addition to your daily diet because they contain:

  • Prebiotic ingredients which contribute to our well being by positively influencing the balance between beneficial cultures and unwanted bacteria in the intestine
  • Iron an important mineral for maintaining healthy red blood cells, which carry oxygen in the blood
  • Inulin is a source of dietary fiber which is lacking in modern diets and improves fat metabolism and bioavailability of minerals such as calcium
  • Omega-3 a vital part of a balanced diet and good nutrition, for health and longevity.

Mayan Table to Contemporary Diet

Mayan legend has it that tortillas were invented by a peasant for his hungry king. The first tortillas were made from native corn and grilled on earthenware utensils. Tortillas remain a staple food in Mexico and much of South America and are:

  • Used as eating utensils to scoop up spicy meat or vegetable sauces,
  • Eaten as sandwiches – tacos,
  • Filled with meat or vegetables and rolled – enchiladas,
  • Filled with a favourite food turned over and fried – quesadillas
  • Cut into thin strips coated with sauce and cooked in the oven – chilaquiles.

Aside from being “the bread of Mexico”, tortillas have become a popular food for North Americans who have been quick to adopt this versatile flatbread.

The Source of Goodness

Flax meal, a key ingredient in our tortillas, is a Functional Food identified by Wellness Foods as important to good health. Its sweet nutty flavour also gives our Wellness Tortillas their special flavour.

Our bodies manufacture most of the fat we need however, there are some fats that our bodies cannot produce and which are essential in the human diet. Linolenic acids, or Omega-3 is one such fatty acid and flax seed, which is ground to make flax meal, is an easily accessible source of Omega-3.

A 2002 study the GISSI-Prevenzione secondary prevention trial reported in the journal Circulation showed that cardiac death could be reduced by 45 percent in subjects who had survived a first heart attack, by including in the diet, even a small amount (about one gram a day) of the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. This and other conclusive studies have lead to new conclusions being published in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines recommend that Americans aged two and over get two eight-ounce servings a week of foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. It is noted that this will reduce the risk of sudden death and death from coronary heart disease in adults by up to 30 percent. Flax meal is one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 is important to good health, normal growth and the normal development of the brain, eyes and nerves. Flax meal also contains both soluble and insoluble fibre and is a source of essential nutrients such as folate, Vitamin B-6, magnesium and iron.
